Proper Food Combining For Better Digestion
What is the idea of proper food combining all about? I can tell you what it's not to start off with. It is not about combining colors to make a pretty looking dish. It is not about combing textures together like soft and hard or crunchy and chewy. It is not about combining spicy with mild or sweet and sour.
All of those combinations are for taste and for presentation. When I talk about proper food combining I am talking about it for digestion purposes. It is the idea of eating foods in such a combination that it gives your body the best chance at proper digestion and utilization of nutrients. Improper food combining will result in you being tired after eating, feeling "heavy" hours after eating a meal, and quite possibly experiencing stomach issues such as acid reflux and similar ailments.
Have you ever felt tired after eating a big meal? Just about everyone has at some time or another. There are two reasons for this; eating too much and combining the wrong foods together. We will address serving size in America as a problem later on. For now I would like to concentrate on eating the wrong combination of foods as the culprit.
You need to understand a couple of important points here before we go any farther. Digestion of food is one of the most energy intensive activities that the body does. Anything that makes this process harder will require expenditure of additional energy. Lastly, different foods use different digestive juices to break them down.
Thanksgiving diner is a great example of a time when most people need a nap after a meal. Besides eating too much it is because of the varied spread that is laid out; meat, potatoes, squash, corn, gravy, stuffing, etc. So we are adding strain on the digestive process and causing multiple digestive juices to be used at the same time. That is why we feel so tired and need a nap.
Starches and proteins use different digestive juices in the digestion process. Starches like breads, pasta, grains and potatoes need a digestive juice that is alkaline in nature. Proteins such as meat, dairy and nuts need a digestive juice that is acidic in nature. Everyone knows that an alkaline and an acid cancel each other out. When this happens the food cannot be digested properly. Proteins and starches cannot digest in the stomach efficiently at the same time; it goes against the chemical laws of nature. An acid or heavy feeling stomach is caused by your food not being digested properly. When you combine proteins and starches at the same meal you open the door for these problems to occur. To combine foods properly you should not be eating a starch and protein at the same meal. Eat one category or the other and watch how much easier digestion occurs. Just because you were brought up to eat "meat and potatoes" at the same meal doesn't mean it is the correct thing to do. Try eating the right way for a week and see how great you feel.
