N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, also named NAC, is a chemically altered version of the body’s non-essential amino acids, which works by detoxifying the body. The amino acid both protects cells from damage and preserves liver function.
NAC is a precursor to Glutathione, the strongest free radical destroyer. Protecting the liver and brain from damage done by pollutants like alcohol, cigarette smoke, and acidic or particulate matter in the air, it offers other health benefits as well
NAC helps the body metabolize fat, and aids in the building of muscle; It can, through a chelating effect rid the body of copper.
Used to treat emphysema, bronchitis, and other adult respiratory problems, NAC plays a role in the production and activity of white blood cells, which fight disease and boost the body’s natural immune response.
NAC also assists in metabolism and function of insulin, a hormone necessary for the proper utilization of sugars and starches.
What Are Some Sources of NAC?
NAC, while produced naturally in the body, is also present in high-protein meats and eggs. Its vegetable sources include broccoli, wheat, garlic, onions, and red peppers
NAC: Things to Watch For
NAC’s less serious side effects include clammy skin, fever, increased lung mucous, and irritation/soreness in the mouth, throat, or lungs. If, however, any side effect becomes bothersome or critical, get to the nearest emergency facility or your doctor as soon as possible.
The less common side effects, which may require immediate medical attention, include wheezing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, especially among asthmatics, and skin rash or irritation.
But all NAC side effects are rare, and it is generally considered a very safe nutrient.
The recommended daily allowance, however, has not been set for this nutrient. A dosage of around 30 to 50 mgs is, in our view, best, but some studies indicate that dosages as high as 1,000 mgs per day are safe.
It is possible that N-acetylcysteine may cause the body to get rid (excrete) the mineral zinc. And because both zinc and the mineral copper should always be taken together, we suggest that, to avoid deficiencies in these important minerals, you take both zinc and copper if consuming N-acetyl L-cysteine.
Women who are pregnant or nursing, and those individuals on prescription drugs, or who have a known medical condition, should always consult with their physician before starting any new supplementation.
Our Tip on Choosing an N-Acetyl-cysteine Product
Because nutritional supplement production, both in the U.S. and other countries, is largely unregulated, both governmental and private studies have shown that consumers of nutritional supplements have only a 1 in 5 chance of purchasing a supplement contain the amount of ingredients stated on the product label, or worse yet, a supplement that is not contaminated with health-impairing toxins.
We therefore advise consumers to buy health supplements from pharmaceutical GMP compliant facilities, which adhere to the world’s most exacting manufacturing standards. Doing as we suggest will ensure you of getting contaminant-free N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, in the full amount for which you have paid.
