There are several signs that one possibly has got a yeast infection of the mouth commonly referred to as thrush. Generally when you look in your mouth you will see thick white patches have begun to form in your mouth and can even appear on your tongue or palate. If left untreated it can lead to serious health problems for a person and a quick diagnosis and treatment is required. If left untreated overtime a person will find it difficult to eat and drink and this can lead to their bodies becoming dehydrated. Certainly such infections in young children and the elderly should be taken seriously as their immune systems are going to be severely comprised and so their bodies will find it much more difficult to attack the infection.

In order to treat this form of infection a doctor will provide some antibiotics to help kill of the yeast that is causing the infection. But before they do prescribe some medication they need to actually verify that it is a yeast infection and not some other illness. Generally a quick look at the infection can tell a doctor if it is a yeast infection or not. But sometimes test need to be carried and to do this they will need to take a sample (scrapping) from the person's mouth. Although you may think yours is a yeast infection the condition in your mouth could be the first signs of some other illness including cancer. So the right diagnosis needs to be made before treatment can begin.

Once the infection has been confirmed as being caused by an excess of yeast in the mouth then treatment can commence. The first thing a person will be required to do is to take an anti-fungal medication such as Fluconazole or Nystatin which can help to eliminate the yeast in their mouth. This medication will either be prescribed in tablet form which the person needs to suck on until completely dissolved, or else in a liquid form that they retain in the mouth before it is swallowed.

Sometimes there are cases of oral yeast infection especially in children where the use of medications is not required. In cases where a child has to take an antibiotic to treat some other ailment and they are then diagnosed with thrush a doctor may suggest that adding unsweetened natural yogurt to their diet will help to cure the problem. The reason why a doctor may suggest this a yeast infection cure of the mouth is because it contains a bacteria which is beneficial to one's body and will help to fight and kill of the overgrowth of yeast in this area of the child's body.
